Today, I am going to talk about five preconceived ideas that prevent us from taking action, from the mooring and going sailing. There are others, but I think they are the five that come back most often.
Because, when we have a boat, we are always a little hesitant, especially when we start, to leave at sea.
So, we always think that we have something to do, that we are missing something in the equipment and so on. I will give you five preconceived ideas that I have identified with my experience that prevent us from dropping off and going to sea and going beyond.

On the boat, we always have a massive list of things to do. As you surely know, there is ALWAYS something to do.
If you do not make a list, I encourage you to do it, it’s essential and it helps to navigate it. That said, you must know that on a boat, the list continues to renew itself. As soon as you take something away, there is something new that happens and nothing but the maintenance of the boat where there is a lot of recurring support to do, it adds, it adds, that s adds.
So if we wait until the list is empty, we are not ready to navigate there.
So what I encourage you to do is to categorize: look at this list and see what seems most important to you, what prevents you from navigating or is it a small comfort that you wish to have.

2 / “I do not feel like going off.”
When we say “go off,” there is a little notion that is subject to interpretation, because it starts when the open sea?
For some people, it’s going to be just getting out of the harbor and staying in the bay, which is going to be a big step forward.
For others, it’s going to be 20 nautical miles offshore. And for others, it’s going to be across the Atlantic and nothing less.
So, it depends a little bit on everyone. And it’s true that when you start in the boating and think offshore, you immediately have images of long night crossing with grains, strong winds, waves of 5 meters: it is a little bit the imagination that we all have.
What is essential to do is to ask yourself:
What does broad represent to me?
Indeed, if your comfort zone is limited to leaving the port and back and forthright in front of the port entrance, no problem, be comfortable with that. And then the next time, try something a bit more advanced.
So if at first your project, your comfort zone, is just out of the harbor, choose a day when the weather is beautiful, there is no wind at all or just a little bit, to sail when even to allow you to move forward and train like that. And the next time, try with conditions a little more muscular, with a bit of wind, maybe try to go out when it rains! It is the practice that advances!
What you have to do is to make your mark, to get into the habit of moving on the boat, to do the maneuvers in light weather so that you can do them more quickly then urgently in case of bad weather.
It will also allow you to work your coastal navigation either on a paper map or on your GPS.
This will also help to see if the boat’s onboard storage are useful once at sea and see if everything is as good ar rhymed as you think.
You will not be the first person to see the coffee machine crashing on the floor right out of the harbor; we’ve all been there 😉
We all forgot to tie this or that thing inside the boat.
So, it will allow you to familiarize yourself with the inside of the boat and know where to look before leaving. What is important to remember is to go to sea regularly and to gain confidence in oneself and one’s boat.
Check your boat motor, is that ok or not.
3 / “I want to make sure I do not end up in bad weather.”
I fully understand this remark and indeed, it’s just common sense. Of course, we do not want to be in bad weather in the ideal.
But the reality is that whether we like it or not, we will still find ourselves in a situation we do not expect.
Sometimes the weather forecast is not 100% accurate and we are a little surprised by the arrival of more demanding conditions, faster or more intense. So in my opinion, what is essential to do is ask yourself, “Well, what am I going to do if it happens? What should I do there quickly to make up for my situation? “
So my advice is:
It’s a little bit like everything in life; it’s with a practice that we get better. So what I propose to do in these cases is to go out on a day when the weather is beautiful, where there is no wind, no wave or a little wind especially for sailboats 🙂 and to train, to simulate the arrival of a gust of wind a little, to practice doing the maneuvers that allow you to navigate appropriately by letting bad weather pass or even reach your destination.
Practice sail reduction maneuvers for sailboats, for example. So, it is essential to train like that. And then, when it’s over, back to the harbor, the local bar or the restaurant, debrief with the rest of the crew and try to figure out what needs to be improved in these maneuvers, so they are more intuitive and faster.
4 / “I have to buy” that “before leaving”
“It” can refer to any very expensive or bulky object that you will not be able to store on board and that you think you need for your navigation.
Because as you well know, space on a boat is minimal. So, in my opinion, the right questions have to be asked pragmatically:
“What can I use that I already have on board and to what extent do I absolutely have to buy the latest one or do some improvement? Is it still enough to sail with what I have on board? “
So, we have to take stock of what we have, make sure that we know how to use, know the limitations of this object for example and so know whether or not we will have to buy the last or something new.
It is more important at first to know why we should buy this or that thing rather than buy the ball in the head without knowing why, because it happens, unfortunately, we are all made by marketing.
You have to know why using it too; sometimes it’s those little things that are wasting time.
We are not going to sail because we are waiting to receive the package, we are waiting for this or that electronic system to be installed on the boat so that we can finally get there.
5 / “I’m not a handyman and if something breaks on the boat, I do not think I’ll be able to fix it.”
This is something that I regularly hear about pontoons among my clients and you can not imagine the results you can get even from scratch.
What would you like to learn?
First, start with an area of the boat that interests you, something you want to learn.
It can be the maintenance of the sails or how to make his fairing himself, polish or clean his boat like a pro.
It does not matter, but it must be something that interests you at least to a minimum and it allows you to learn more efficiently.
Ask the pro!
Then, if you are used to having this work done by your professional locally, the day he comes in, you can ask him if it does not bother him that you are on board to ask him questions.
And when he is there doing the operations on the boat, ask him a lot of questions. Look at what he’s doing, try to understand why he’s doing something or that, why he’s not doing other things.
The important thing is to learn.
It can happen that some professionals do not see it with a right eye since they will have the feeling that (it may be the case elsewhere huh) next time you would not appeal to him.
As a boat maintenance professional, I do not have any problem; I like to transmit. And when customers ask me questions, on the contrary, I love it and I encourage them to do it. In any case, that’s it, learn from this professional even if you do not do this work there and you continue to call him in the future, at least you will know what you are talking about.
