How To

How to clean a boat

Now the days are getting longer and warmer since it is time for the often unloved ritual to put the sanctified vehicle before the commissioning with a hose, scrubber, and shampoo. This is, however, only the first course, because when the dirt of the last months is gone, surfaces such as gel coat or lacquer still need further treatment to shine for the season. But the matter is not yet settled. Because what is clean and should be sealed, so that it remains as possible. And if you need a bit of Zen, you will also find inspiration in how to make spring cleaning easier.

Here are the most important tips for spring cleaning in short form:

The easiest way to do this is with a soft bristle brush and an ecologically safe boat soap (see What to do, where at the end of the article). This can be used to remove superficial dirt, but not the stubborn, For example, resin drops from trees or bird droppings. Such impurities often require a separate treatment with special cleansing agents. Often the steam emitter is also used to work because it is convenient, fast and effective. Important: All hatches should be tight, water-resistant equipment should be protected or temporarily dismantled and jammed, and water flows secured. Work in small parts from top to bottom and rinse the cleaned surface before proceeding to the next section. Remaining water collected in corners and indentations and not running completely, with a sponge.

At the same place a few words about the bilge, where the most diverse things like to collect. Not only water but also unappetizing things like oil, algae, gammliges Essenesrete, small parts and dead animals. In short, everything that does not go off board ends at some point at the lowest point. And there it remains until one draws to get it out. And this is, well, a task with extremely moderate entertainment. Accordingly, it is also rarely made. So: eyes to and through with sponge, cleaning rags and a citrus cleaner that emulsifies oily, fresh smells, but does not attack polyester, metal or plastics. The small money that comes to light is part of the cleaning power, of course.
Important: As with feces, bilge water must be disposed of separately. There are special facilities in the yacht ports or water stations. Never tilt overboard!

Hand-in-hand with rags or cotton wool, but is usually laborious (and not very entertaining) and therefore only recommended for the treatment of small surfaces. In most cases, this device is equipped with an eccentric and oscillating grinder or drilling machines with a polishing plate. Or, even better, special polishing machines, in which the speed can be adjusted. They work quickly, but can also cause muscle soreness, especially when working a lot on their heads.

Caution: Pay attention to the grain size of the polish: The coarser, the more radical. Who pushes it too much, can damage paint, lacquer or glue. The treated surface should not be too warm because the polish or the wax will then dry too quickly, which will not give good results. Distribute the polish to a manageable area of one to two square meters, which will treat it immediately and evenly. When drying, a film is formed which can be wiped clean with a clean, soft cloth.

Once the desired gloss has been produced, it must also be protected with wax or Teflon, especially after the treatment of the surface with an aggressive cleaning agent. Many manufacturers of polishing products have products on offer, which both works in one create, at least promises the advertising. If you do not have your own experience, you can inquire about the best things to do when you are in the hall or the hotel.

Gray, weathered teak can be an aristocratic predicate, or an annoyance, depending on the temperament situation of the owner. If it is so gray in front of the gray, must be active and also here the well-known Dreiklang: Brush-freshening-seal (or oil and impregnate). Only use products which are intended for nautical use and pay attention to active substances that are not classified as hazardous to health.

Glass windows with normal glass cleaner, acrylic window however with special cleaner from the boat trade, or with a polish for the removal of scratches. Do not use aggressive solvents that damage the surface.

Gummies suffer particularly when exposed to the elements for a long time without protection. They become dull, porous, hard and brittle. To avoid this, especially in well-visible places such as the scouring strip, take care of these surfaces with a cleansing agent that also cares for. Virtually all yacht manufacturers carry the appropriate products in their assortment. The same applies to fenders and inflatable boats, but they are usually made of PVC or similar soft plastics so that they may need other cleaning agents.

Metal fittings also need some love, at least from time to time. When they shine, they will appreciate the appearance of each boat. Dirt, rust, and stains are best achieved with a soft cloth and a polishing cream made of high-quality wax which also prevents re-starting.

Upholstery and carpets
Spring cleaning is probably the best opportunity to rebuild these parts of the boat equipment. They spend the winter often loveless in a sack or shelf, dry hopefully, but just south of fresh. Although a long series of products are offered in the accessory trade, in most cases (for example, in the case of fabric upholstery and carpets), the agents from the cleaning cabinet are at home.

Bird droppings and spinnerets cause stubborn stains on tarpaulins and splash caps. Most special cleaners can be sprayed comfortably onto the affected areas and rinsed with water after a short exposure. Caution: If you want to be safe, the treated areas will be resealed to restore the impregnation and to ensure the water tightness. Zips should not be forgotten on occasion. Brush, lukewarm soapy water and at the end, when dry again, spray with a non-oily slip spray, so that everything runs again as lubricated …

What can you do?
Decency and sense of responsibility presuppose that bootleggers familiarize themselves with the circumstances and laws on the ground before handling sandpaper, plaster, and solvent or paint. Polishing, as far as nothing is in the water, is also permitted at the footbridge. However, which water may be used for cleaning work depends on the regulations of the individual federal states. In case of doubt, contact the local environmental office. Cleaning with soap and detergent is usually not allowed at the waterhole. As the cleaning of the underwater vessel, this is often only permitted on land, where the sewage is collected in a collection plant.
