  • Locate the two red wires that come out of the 100 Amp combiner battery.
  • Run one of the red wires from the combiner to the starter battery. The starter battery is located in the body of the outboard motor of your boat.
  • Connect the combiner cable to the starter battery through the positive battery charging socket. The positive charge socket is the side that also has a red wire on it.

When do I need to charge the battery?

It is better to charge your batteries immediately after they have been discharged. Therefore, never leave your traction batteries stored in a discharged state.

Batteries can never be discharged to more than 80%  of their maximum capacity. A deeper discharge leads to wear of an active material and results in a lower sufficient capacity.

How long do I need to charge my battery?

There is no univocal answer to that question. The charging time of your battery depends on the load factor on one side, and the type of charger on the other.

Charge factor

The battery is charged by putting more energy than it was consumed. The  FC (load factor)  of a battery is the ratio between the ampere-hours charged and the ampere-hours (Ah) consumed. Most batteries have a load factor of 1.2.

For example, a traction battery with a nominal capacity of 1000 Ah was discharged in a proportion of 80% (800 Ah). At a load factor (FC) of 1.2, then 1.2 x 800 Ah = 960 Ah must be reset in the battery.

Type of Chargers

Different types of battery chargers are available in the market. In addition to the conventional or low-frequency charger, another standard option is a high-frequency charger. A  high-frequency charger is considerably more expensive to buy, but it charges the battery more quickly and economically than a conventional charger. Thanks to intelligent charging technology, the batteries last longer. A high-frequency charger charges efficiently and prevents premature wear of both the battery and the charger.

Risk when charging

When charging your traction batteries, there are some risks to consider.

  • Heat: Heat is generated when charging a battery. If too much heat is made, a fire can start.
  • Oxyhydrogen: Charging wet batteries produce hydrogen, generated by the electrolysis of the electrolyte. In combination with oxygen in the air, the released hydrogen (H2) can form an explosive mixture (oxyhydrogen). Hydrogen is lighter than air and rises to the maximum point. That is why there should always be sufficient ventilation when loading.
  • Sparks: When you disconnect a battery from a charger while it is on, sparks may be generated. These sparks can cause the oxyhydrogen formed to explode.

Prevention measures

  1. Use a separate cargo area.
  2. Remove flammable material from around the battery and charger.
  3. Ventilate the cargo area as much as possible. In this way, it prevents oxyhydrogen from accumulating.
  4. Prohibit smoking, welding, or polishing in the cargo area.
  5. Provide an explosion-proof electrical installation (lighting, plugs …).
  6. Avoid short circuits: never place metallic objects on the battery.
  7. Place the charger in a holder if possible. This prevents dust from accumulating and causing a fire.
  8. Check the charging cables and immediately repair them if the damage is detected.
  9. Turn off the charger before connecting or disconnecting the battery.
